I have been working in the field of housing for 30 years now. I started off as a receptionist at an apartment complex with market rate apartments. My career path then led me to a HUD subsidized building, serving families and seniors. Working with seniors captured my heart and I have not looked back since. Working with older adults continues to be more than a career, it is a mission. Over the years I have been privileged to work for companies and agencies that labor diligently to create programs and services that enhance the lives of all they serve. I also have been very blessed to work alongside excellent professionals who share the same passion for this industry. Together, under the prodigious leadership and compassion of Jewish Senior Life, we are given the honor and opportunity to change lives on a daily basis here at Teitel Apartments.
Resident Service Coordinators
Prior to my position as Resident Service Coordinator at Teitel Apartments, I worked at Jewish Family Service as a Resettlement Counselor for 10 years. My mission at Teitel for almost 19 years is to assess service needs of residents and link them to the appropriate providers. I also assist seniors and disabled adults in accessing needed supportive services to allow them to maintain their independence and remain in the home.
Resident Service Coordinator
I have been working at JSL as a Resident Service Coordinator for almost 28 years. I assist residents in a socially responsible manner consistent with the values, ethical principles and standards of the profession. We strive to help our residents maintain their independence in a dignified manner for as long as possible in an independent setting. We do this by introducing our clients and their families to resources for services that may help them in their daily living. It is my mission to improve, maintain and enhance the quality of life of our residents.
It was the winter of 2008 when I discovered the Resident Live-In position on Craigslist. I was the 3rd person interviewed before receiving the call about being hired. Working with older adults seemed like the perfect niche. After 7 years of service to JSL, accepting the position of Program Coordinator wasn’t a difficult decision. I have been in the human service field for over 20 years in one form or another. In all of that experience, it still takes a team that is focused on the health and wellness of people to make this job successful. At Teitel Apartments, our residents make that task effortless, rewarding and enjoyable.
Laura Mae Shields
Dining Room Manager
With more than 20 years of experience in management, I began working at Jewish Senior Life in 2014 as the Hechtman Dining Room Manager. In 2015, I transferred to the Oak Park campus to oversee the food service program at Prentis, Teitel, Coville and the Meals on Wheels program. I am a “service safe proctor" and facilitator through the National Restaurant Association. I am currently attending North Dakota University, working towards certification as a Dietary Manager. With the help of our exceptional staff, I take great pride in delivering high quality Kosher meals to our residents. Our menus are resident driven, with a healthy and seasonal focus. My personal motto is “Teamwork is key”. Everyone will achieve more with collaboration between staff, volunteers and the residents.
Front office support/Receptionist
I have been working for JSL for 20 years. I started out as a part time receptionist. About 4 years later a full time position opened up for a Data Entry Clerk in the Marketing & Development Department. Shortly after that I was promoted to Marketing Associate. I managed the wait list for all of our properties and worked closely with the Marketing Director on numerous projects and fundraisers. I did that for 10 years. I am now currently working at the Teitel Building and have been here for 6 years. I truly enjoy working here and being with the residents. They are like my extended family. It is just a wonderful feeling when you know you have made a difference in someone’s life or put a smile on someone’s face.
As an Office Manager at Teitel Apartments, I am often the first point of contact for prospective tenants and their families. I conduct apartment tours, answer questions, process and verify applications and coordinate move-ins and move-outs. I joined Teitel in 2004 and I am very proud of our JSL community. It is my goal to always provide a warm and informative welcome to residents and families, as well as to make sure the transition to becoming a Teitel resident goes smoothly. I love playing a part in helping our residents have comfortable homes in an enriching social environment. Additionally, I am a native Russian speaker, which allows me to assist in communicating with our Russian-speaking residents. In my free time I like to read, travel, photograph nature and people and solve Sudoku and KenKen puzzles.
I have more than 15 years of experience working in the Maintenance Department. During my time working in the Teitel Building I received two promotions from Housekeeper to Maintenance Technician and then finally into my current position as Building Supervisor within a 2 year period. I also worked 4 years as a member of the agency’s kitchen staff back in the early 90s, which was my first job while in high school. I enjoy listening to smooth jazz vinyl on my record player and I am a supportive sports fan of the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Lions and Red Wings. Here at Teitel we focus heavily on customer service and providing a safe, healthy and beautiful environment for our residents to call home.
