There are many ways you can support our older adults – get involved! One-to-one interaction is the best way to build relationships, increase longevity and generally enhance our live and the lives of others. Here are but a few ways Jewish Senior Life welcomes volunteers:
Auxiliary Gift Shop and Nosh Nook
Volunteer to sell gift items or make and serve sandwiches and coffee for residents/staff Monday through Friday. Opportunities are available at the Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza in West Bloomfield; Danto Family Health Care Center in West Bloomfield; Medilodge of Southfield gift shop. Volunteer at the Walk of Ages, an annual fundraising event to support programming and services for older Jewish adults.
Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza
Assistance is needed for the following activities: Out Trips, Tea Time, Bingo, Game Time (i.e. Rummykub, Scrabble, Poker), Art Club, Baking Club, Monthly Birthday Party, and special events (i.e. Fashion Show, New Year’s Eve Party, Dream Cruise).
Dorothy and Peter Brown Memory Care Pavilion (MCP)
Assist at field trips, playing cards and games, gardening, jewelry making, exercise, baking, arts and crafts, music and movement. Share a memory, one-on-one conversation, arrange Shabbat flowers, and help with the walking and book clubs.
Dorothy and Peter Brown Adult Day Care Program
Assist with field trips, playing cards and games, gardening, exercise, baking, arts and crafts, music, creative movement, one-on-one conversation. Help with greeting families, answer the phone, and light clerical work.
A volunteer is a treasured friend to a person who is isolated from the community. Older adults who have little or no family involvement are provided support and friendship. Communication with our volunteers is helpful in keeping us informed of the needs of those we serve.
Jewish Community Chaplaincy and Community Outreach Program
Be a friendly visitor, entertainer for reminiscence group/Jewish music programs or religious service leader. Help with programs and delivery of holiday parcels for elderly Jewish residents in secular care facilities.
Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families
Be a friendly visitor. Assist at Café Europe and on trips. Help with intergenerational programs. Conduct interviews for the “Portraits in Honor” program. Assist at special events.
Coville Assisted Living, at the Prentis residence, Taubman Jewish Community Campus in Oak Park
Assist in the many activities engaging the residents in arts and crafts, playing cards and games, exercise, baking, music and movement, and one on one conversation. Help celebrate Shabbat and Holidays with residents. Accompany them on trips. Set up for special programs, Dream Cruise, birthday parties.
JSL Independent living at Hechtman, Meer, Prentis and Teitel
Share your interests, skills, knowledge and talents with the residents by leading a class, activity, discussion or workshop. Help residents at out trips and maintaining their vegetable gardens. Visit and build supportive relationship with residents. Take a few hours to “run” the residences café/store in the building. Be the extra useful hands at parties and special programs and events.
